Plane Crash in Bohemia

On Saturday, June 5th, at 1508 hours, the Bohemia Fire Department was activated for an aircraft incident at Ocean Avenue and Veterans Memorial Highway. Upon the arrival of Second Assistant Chief Mike Stankunis, he observed a small plane lying between two buildings on Ocean Ave south of Veterans Memorial Highway, completely engulfed in flames. Two victims from the aircraft were already out of the plane and being attended to. Moments later, a Crash Fire Rescue truck arrived from Long Island MacArthur Airport and immediately extinguished the fire with a foam operation. In addition to the assistance from the Crash Fire Rescue truck from MacArthur Airport, Bohemia received mutual aid from West Sayville Fire Department, Lakeland Fire Department, Islip Town HazMat and Community Ambulance Company. MVA Veterans Hwy & Ocean Av

Vets Hwy And Ocean Ave 4/11/10

January 10, 2010 at 2329 hours the Bohemia Fire Department was activated for a signal 23 MVA-Heavy Rescue with a rollover at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Highway and Ocean Avenue. Bohemia responded with Quint 3-12-4, Engine 3-12-7,and Heavy Rescue 3-12-8. The scene was under the command of Captain Lou Csabon. Sayville Community Ambulance also responded with two rigs. Three vehicles were involved in the crash, with one driver having to be extricated by Suffolk County Police Department Emergency Services and the crew from Bohemia’s Heavy Rescue. Two people in one of the vehicles were transported, one by medivac to Stony Brook University Hospital and the other by Sayville Community Ambulance to Southside Hospital. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at Southside Hospital, the passenger died several days later. All units were back in service at 0002 hours.

On Sunday, March 21 at 0930 hours, the Bohemia Fire Department was activated for a Signal 23 heavy rescue on Pond Road. Upon arrival of Chief Jeff Behounek and First Assistant Chief Rich Andersen they observed a late model Chevy Tahoe off the side of the road with a tree on top of it. The three occupants of the vehicle were traveling south on Pond Road when the tree apparently broke off from its base and came crashing down on the car as it passed. The driver and back seat passenger, a young girl, were extricated immediately but the vehicle had to be cut apart with the Hurst Tool to get the passenger out. Fire Department personnel, aided by Suffolk County Police Emergency services were able to free the passenger after about thirty minutes. All victims were transported to Southside Hospital by Sayville Community Ambulance.

New 2010 Chief's Elected

 Elections were held for the position of Bohemia Fire Department Chiefs on December 3, 2009 with Jeff Behounek running unopposed for Chief of the Bohemia Fire Department (3-12-30).  First Assistant Chief (3-12-31) is Richard Andersen and Mike Stankunis was elected as 2nd Assistant Chief (3-12-32) - Best wishes in your new positions as Chief's of the Bohemia Fire Department!
